What is a Mammal?
A mammal is a vertebrate, a vertebrate is an animal that has vertebrae in it's back (a backbone) that protect a spinal cord. The mammal is just one of the main groups within the different groups of vertebrates with subgroups of Monotremes,Marsupials and Placentals, the meerkat is a placental.

How to identify a Mammal?
A mammal can be identified using some of these features,

- There skin is covered in hair or fur
- Breathe air using there lungs
- Usually have 2 pairs of appendages (arms/legs)
- The females usually have mammary glands which let milk out to feed young
- Have a very well developed brain
- Live on land and in water
